Uninypa is a collaborative artistic project between senior women artists of the APY Art Centre Collective’s Adelaide Studio and First Nations inmates at Adelaide Women’s Prison.
Launched in 2023, the Uninypa project is the first of its kind. Led by First Nations artists and inmates, Uninypa is focused on building confidence, cultural connections and new skills in art and design practice through ceramics.
Uninypa is led by senior Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara women including Sandra Pumani, Nyunmiti Burton, Leah Brady, Josina Pumani, Teresa Baker and Rhoda Tjitayi who are respected cultural leaders, as well as practicing artists working at the APY Studio in Adelaide. Since mid 2023, 8 artists have delivered weekly ceramics workshops to over 25 inmates at Adelaide Women’s Prison. These workshops provide mentorship, cultural guidance and artistic direction to First Nations inmates currently incarcerated at Adelaide Women’s Prison and Pre-Release Centre.
Through the program over 100 ceramics pieces were created. Over $5000 in artwork sales have been made to date with 100% of income going directly to inmates and their families.
