Valerie Young was born and raised in Amata, where the changing seasons and vibrant native flowers shaped her connection to Country. Her paintings celebrate Ngayuku ngura (my Country), capturing the beauty of Amata’s native flora and the memories of growing up surrounded by colourful landscapes.
Through her practice, Valerie reflects on the impact of buffel grass, which has overtaken many of the native flowers she remembers from childhood. Her paintings honour these disappearing plants, preserving their beauty and sharing an important story of Country, change, and resilience.
